The Global Network on Disability Inclusive and Accessible Urban Development (DIAUD) recently hosted a kick-off meeting outlining its agenda, organizational overview and featuring presentations by noted expert Fernando Jácome Gavilánez. Mr. Gavilánez is Coordinator of Foreign Affairs and Specialist in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for the Republic of Ecuador.
His presentation outlined the evolution of Ecuador’s national public policy on disabilities, the national strategy on universal accessibility and the progress Ecuador and various partners have made in pursuit of Universal Design and inclusion. Ecuador has a unique commitment to inclusion and is highly involved with the UN on such efforts. In 2016, Quito, Ecuador’s capital city hosted “Habitat III”--the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development at which the New Urban Agenda was adopted. The DIAUD network supports Habitat III and the New Urban Agenda, an international urbanization model through the disability-inclusive contributions made by members of the network.
