Unintentional barriers in the veterinary workplace can affect team members with visible, invisible, temporary, or chronic conditions. These barriers may show up in ordinary routines, communication patterns, workflow expectations, and physical environments. How do systems, habits, and daily practices shape everyone’s ability to contribute to your workplace? In this module, your team will be introduced to Universal Design as a set of practices that encourage collaboration and belonging without requiring personal disclosure or singling anyone out.

You can be among the first to watch a short video Rosemarie Rossetti created for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as part of its new learning module, “Journey for Teams: Championing Universal Design”, developed for veterinary professionals.

This module and video are designed to help veterinary teams create more inclusive and accessible environments for both clients and staff by addressing and eliminating disablism. AVMA’s workplace culture vision is clear and compelling: “Building a healthy workplace culture that fosters an environment of universal design that supports full participation, enabling all individuals to belong, collaborate, and grow.”

“Universal design boosts productivity, reduces turnover, and enhances the organization’s public reputation.”

The production itself modeled inclusive collaboration. Cinematographer Jake Ammann was onsite in her home, while video producer Joshua Barnes joined remotely from Denver. Using a tablet mounted on a tripod, Joshua conducted the interview. He guided lighting and camera placement, demonstrating how high-quality learning experiences can be created through thoughtful, accessible, and flexible approaches.
